The InIT executed the xInIT project. The goal of this project is to build and develop a modern information platform based on open source products. The web-application xGate as part of this open source platform will be integrated into it.

Today a lot of important electronic documents like project works, thesis or lessons documents aren?t centrally disposable at the ZHW. No uniform solution exists for their archiving, management and their access possibilities are limited. The efficient transfer of knowledge between the different project teams, lecturers und students become complicated as a result. The result of this thesis is a method of resolution for these problems.

xGate is a portal that helps the user to publish his electronic documents and making them accessible to third parties. The WebGUI is logically built and is self-explanatory so that an unversed user can find his way around immediately. The gathering of information by xGate through divers assistance and auxiliary functions will be best supported. xGate transfers automatically for publication the released data files to CMS (Content Management System) of InIT .

xGate is based on the Cocoon web development framework and attaches around the Cocoon located technology XML, Java and JavaScript. xGate has interfaces for storage and management of the data to Concurrent Versions System Subversion and to XML-database eXist.

xGate distinguishes itself by its modular structure and almost unlimited expandability. To use xGate the client simply needs a standard browser.

During the work we noticed that a lot of open source technologies, which have been inserted for this project, are barely documented. Many of the countless problems and errors that have arisen during work could only be solved by tirelessly checking over and over again.
