The diploma thesis No.DA05Bhi5 is a feasibility study which researches the possibilities of vision based navigation in autonomous mobile robots. Navigation shall be based only on information gathered from images that are being captured by the robot itself with the help of a webcam.

Goal of this diploma thesis is to create a software application for the Smartease robot system that enables the robot to navigate around a certain path thanks to the developped vision system. Soil conditions shall be identified by digital image processing and shall enable the robot to navigate around the lawn, paths and places.

A very intensive study of digital image processing theories ended in a general analysis pattern that shows very promising results for various environmental situations.

For this analysis pattern software designs were developped and the simplest design was successfully implemented in a first running software version for the Smartease robot.
