Due to further development in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) towards ?Pervasive Computing?, a new technology to digitally automate identification has originated: Radio Frequency Identification (RFID). By employing RFID-technology, objects can be uniquely identified through radio frequency signals with no need of visual verification. RFID has the potential to drastically increase the efficiency of business processes.

This diploma thesis focuses on identification and evaluation of RFID risks, under the aspect of ?Business Interruption?. The extent of a Business Interruption is defined by two factors: time and damage. The amount of loss depends on the enterprise affected and can therefore only be calculated based on a precise example. That is why the risk analysis of this thesis is mainly orientated to the time factor. The duration of a business interruption is influenced by the probability of discovery and the recovery possibility of a malfunction in a RFID-system. Based on the factor time, risks can be divided into three categories with high, medium and low BI-potential.

An RFID-system always consists of the two components transponder and reader. The system can be complemented with specific components of a company, like the interface between reader and backend or a database. The risk analysis demonstrates that only risks depending on the specific part of the RFID-system show a high BI-potential.

Risks that endanger transponder and reader have only low to medium potential to threaten the business of a company. The following risks, which result from the malfunction of an RFID-system, can put a company in danger: interruption of the flow of information (data), loss of data, data integrity or data confidentiality. It has shown that the dimension of a Business Interruption is not only affected by the time factor, but also by the components of the RFID-system involved.
