The Task was set by professor Mund and Mr Molinari from the company Molinari Cons. Molinari Cons. is owner of the web application BIGS, which was created for the Bayrischen Oberlandbahnen. The application is realised with Active Server Pages on a MS SQL-database. This application is needed to record and process notices of malfunctions of the Intergraltrains. Unfortunately, the web application is deficient and as well restricted regarding Windows applications.

Our main task included the improvement of the application in an open source environment by means of Jakarta Struts framework. First of all, we had to elicit the problems and deficiencies of the existing application. Then, we had to realize a workflow of the application. For this purpose, we had become familiarized with the technology around Struts and ASP. Parallel we had to become acquainted with the technology of Torque (Object Mapping) as well.

We analyzed the workflow of malfunctions continuously and transferred them with Jakarta Struts. In addition, we had to create a MySQL database from the existing MS SQL database. We adapted the database for the workflow notices malfunctions.

Through our work, we are able to point out the advantages of Jakarta Struts compared to the old technology. We created a base for the company Molinari Cons. with which they may realize the rest of the application.
