IPv6 is now for some time operational, however it is rarely used. In the first part of this diploma work the bases of this protocol are compiled and the support of different operating systems is evaluated. The focus lays thereby on Windows and Linux. Under Linux the kernel must be recompiled to have a thorough IPv6 support. The current Windows versions provide IPv6 out-of-the-box, the older ones need either a service pack or a special technology preview.

The first experiments were made with manually configured IP addresses. For the conclusion of the first part the automatic address assigment was analyzed with the Domino LAN Analyzer. After testing the basic features of IPv6 in the first part, the practical side is covered in the second part.

Firstly, IPv6 implementations of well established Interior Gateway Protocols (IGP), RIPng, IS-IS and OSPFv3 were tested. The IPv6 enabled router Cisco 2611XM and as counterpart a PC running Linux and the routing software Zebra were utilized.

Indispensable for a smooth migration from IPv4 to IPv6, the three most important techniques Tunneling, NAT Protocol translation (NAT-PT) and Transport Relay Translator (TRT) were implemented and extensively tested. Since the Cisco supports only the first two procedures, TRT was tested only on the Linux router. The Tunneling took place over the lab network which is a pure IPv4 network that consists of four Cisco routers.

A further section is concerned with Access Control Lists (ACL) on Cisco router, which enhance network security and help to relieve firewalls from traffic. Here, blocking of ports and subnets were tested.

In the end there was the attempt to connect to the 6Bone, the IPv6 internet. For that purpose a tunnel broker was selected and a connection with a 6over4-tunnel over the IPv4 internet established.
