The goal of this thesis was to evaluate and implement a hard realtime support under Linux. This work is based upon the project ?MP3-Player auf StrongArm Board unter Linux? by U. Kaufmann and S. Traxler, which ported and installed Linux on a StrongArm CPU. The newest generation of Bernina sewing machines provides the hardware platform.

Besides the evaluation of an appropriate realtime system, a lot of work had to be done for the Linux part. As well as controlling the display and touchscreen, a lot of other peripherals like network and USB had to be installed. Unfortunately we weren't able to commission the Network and USB.

We have chosen the Real Time Application Interface (RTAI) of the ?Dipartimento di Ingegneria Aerospaziale Politecnico di Milano? as realtime support to Linux. RTAI is as Linux itself a community effort and therefore available as open source.
