During the past years the number of internet users rose exponentially. The results of a study of Swisscom/Tages-Anzeiger (March 2002) show that from over two million people approx. 90% use the internet at least once per week. From these 90% half of the people are even on-line daily.

With the Swiss Internet Analysis 2002 the today's standings of the internet in Switzerland were analyzed and represented from the technical point of view. In order not to lose the overview in midst of the many tables and diagrams, the diploma thesis is divided into three parts (with some facts of the results):

1. Domain Analysis: A quarter of all mail servers use Sendmail. Swisscom IP-Plus still controls the market of internet providers. Under the web servers Apache is the leader, just before Microsoft. Linux is the most used operating system in the world of servers.

2. E-mail and Web Analysis: Communication by E-Mail is much popular on working days than on weekends. Hotmail.com is clearly the most used Domain. Half of all e-mails have a size upto 4 KB. 95% of all e-mails are sent away only to one recipient. People prefer surfing in the office than at home. Cablecom leads the rank list of the ISPs before Bluewin and Sunrise. No chance for Netscape: Microsoft Internet Explorer dominates the market with over 80%. The Windows operating systems remain at the top of the rank list of the client operating systems.

3. TCP Analysis: The most used TCP package values are window size = 16'384, window scale = 0, MSS = 1'460, TTL = 119 and ECN = 0x10. The largest data traffic runs over AS 3303 (Swisscom).

In November 2002 the results will be placed on www.swiss-internet-analysis.org.
