In the beginning of the year 2002, Bluetooth radio technology begun to achieve at the market, but the compatibility between Bluetooth-devices is still in a bad state. Setting-up a device is a problem for a lot of users. Furthermore, some certified products, even though they support similar profiles, are not able to communicate with other devices.

ANATEC company provided a professional Bluetooth test environment for this work. This environment is composed of two devices (Merlin and Merlin?s Wand) for tracing and catching Bluetooth-traffic from the radio-layer up to application protocols.

The main question of this diploma thesis is: ?how this two analysing devices show incompatibilities between the Bluetooth protocols and in what way this problems will be displayed?? In addition, the devices has been checked in their capability for a Technical University. This all has been done by several test scenarios with different Bluetooth devices. This test-scenarios are based on a capacious theoretical part about the Bluetooth protocol stack. This part gives an introduction in the complex protocol-architecture of Bluetooth. Furthermore, there is a part with throughput measurements of the test-devices. At the end, is a describtion of a Linux Bluetooth protocol stack implementation on a Notebook.

The test environment has proved as very useful while looking for problems. Some incompatibilities have been demonstrated or repaired by Merlin?s traces. Other problems has been removed by simple software updates.

The working area has been made up of two analysing tools (Merlin and Merlin?s Wand), two Notebooks with Bluetooth PCMCIA-Cards, three different mobile phones, two headset from different manufacturers, a Bluetooth USB Adapter and a Palm V with Bluetooth clip-on.
