The missing confidence of B2C-customers increases to an acute problem of the Internet Business. It is a fact, that there is a significant difference between the more general interests of enterprises and the more specific interests of customers as well as there is a difference between the rather slow legislation process and the fast changing demands of society. Data security is an important instrument to bridge this gap. In particular, data security labels are able to diminish this difference and at the same time to build a basis to gain back the confidence of the customers.

The goal of the diploma project was to find all existing data security labels and to evaluate them with the focus on the auditing requirements. The emphasis of the evaluation was focused on the legal, technical as well as the social requirements. Because of the quite large amount of discovered labels a preselection was necessary. It was obvious that some labels were specialized in different aspects of data security. That is why some focused only on the medical sector and other ones on the general B2C sector.

The results showed a very high degree of elaboration of the labels. It was obvious, that almost all labels were really strict on their requirements as well as on their audit procedures by focusing on their main customers. This circumstance could be related to the preselection and that is why the results are to be taken with caution. It may be, that this preselection influenced the results with the consquence that all evaluated label were qualified as ?good?.

A central question still remains: How will the so called pure data security label develop in the next years? For a further investigation, it would have been very interesting to know the result of the notification of ?e-comtrust? by the European Committe of Standartization. The answers to this questions will be given in the future.
