With the growing desire for mobility, geographic information is becoming increasingly central to our everyday life. In the past few years, the need for computer based systems that provide user-friendly access to geographic information has become more and more apparent.

The goal of our diploma thesis is the creation of a Geographic Information System (GIS) that provides the basic capabilities of a GIS over the Internet. Our system aims at making geographic information available on the Internet in a similar way like web pages can be accessed in the world wide web.

In our system, geographic data is stored in a central place. Two groups of different users who can retrieve this data are supported. One group can view the geographic data with a traditional web browser. The other group uses a specialized application to not only view the data but also add information to the system.

There are already systems available that can be used to achieve these tasks. However, most of them are too complex for the average computer user. Our goal is to fill this gap by providing a simple solution that can be used by every Internet user.

One major problem of such a system is the high transfer volume that is required. As a result of this project, we have shown that it is possible to keep this transfer to a minimum without significant loss of information and accuracy.

Our thesis has shown that it is realistic to work with geographic information over the Internet even with vast amounts of data.
