The goal of the present paper is the formulation of an IT strategy and IT security strategy for the renowned defense company of MOWAG AG, headquartered in Kreuzlingen, Switzerland. At the beginning of the work, the existing IT organization and infrastructure was analyzed, and the current state was recorded. The business requirements were determined in a series of interviews. All interview partners also had to assess the internal IT services. The knowledge gained from these interviews was recorded in the form of a SWOT profile of the IT department.

The desired concept outlines the state of MOWAGs IT in the year 2007. It is based on the business requirements. This paper focuses on the development of the desired concept, and on the strategic measures to eliminate the existing weak points and to limit the existing risks, that may be derived from it. The IT staff members were involved in the development of the strategy. The paper closes with a critical scrutiny of the selected strategy, and with the description of an adequate Strategy Review Process.

Following are some essential strategic measures that may be applied by MOWAG?s IT in order to cope with existing and future business requirements:

• Organization of the IT Service Management along the lines of a proven reference model - Evaluation and implementation of a new Enterprise Resources Planning solution - Evaluation and implementation of a Document Managing System

A number of suggestions for the improvement of IT security within MOWAG are also submitted. In particular, an IT contingency planning is urgently recommended.

The IT strategy and the IT security strategy contain pragmatic approaches that are adapted to the requirements of the internal customers. The strategy paper is a sound basis for a better business support by IT. This is intended to make a lasting contribution to the future success of MOWAG.
